What Was Life Like For ABORIGINES Before European Settlement? Life for aboriginal people before European settlement was good and peaceful. They went fishing and went hunting for kangaroos , rabbits, goannas and other animals. They also got their food from the land and bush like fruits, seeds, nuts , berries and many other foods- there was plenty for them. They didn’t need to travel far from their lands because there was so much food. If they didn’t have something they traded with other tribes. Everybody got along well. They respected the land, and used it as much as they needed without destroying it. Indigenous people had to build shelters because it protected them from the hot sun, rain and animals that could give them diseases like small pox. The aboriginal people used trees, some bark of a tree to build their shelters with. They built huts and some were built on stilts, they were big and small. The huts were rounded at the top and looked like a dome, the clay was used for the walls, and leaves and twigs were used to hold the huts together. The aboriginals didn’t wear much clothing but they needed them when it was cold or rainy. They used spears to kill animals and got their clothing by using the skin of the animals and sometimes leaves were used as clothing too.
Life before European Settlement cont’d. The aboriginals used tools and weapons to build their huts, to hunt for their food, to protect themselves and also for ceremonies. Tools were really important because without tools they couldn’t do anything. The tools were made of plant fibres, shells, wood and bones, the tools that they made were boomerangs, spears and knives and many other things. History was told through dances, stories, myths and legends. They spoke about the dreamtime which is the understanding of the world - of it’s creation and it’s great stories. The dreaming is about how the stars were formed and how the sun came to be. When the European's came they ruined the aboriginal’s life because they took over their land and said this is our land now. They treated them with no respect. European Settlement was a bad thing that happened.

Kevin Rudd’s Sorry Speech. Kevin Rudd said sorry to the indigenous people in Parliament house. Kevin Rudd said sorry because aboriginal children were taken away from their parents, this was called the “Stolen Generation”. He said it must not happen again and everyone must be treated nicely and as an equal because we are Australian. The parents and families would’ve felt really sad and angry at the people who took their children and tore their family apart. I would feel sooo sad if that happened to me.
