Principles of Development • Development occurs in a sequence or pattern of stages that can be predicted. Infants progress through similar stages in about the same order Example: Infants learn to hold their head up steadily before they learn to sit up
Principles of Development 2. Development occurs at a different rate for different children Each child is an individual and will progress through the stages at a different rate Example: One infant learns to sit up at 5 months, while another will not sit up until 7 months
Principles of Development 3. Developmental skills build on earlier learning. • Development follows a step by step sequence Example: Before the infant uses their fingers to reach and grasp, they use their whole hands to reach and grasp
Principles of Development 4. Each area of development is related to other areas (interrelated) • Physical, Intellectual, Emotional and Social development occurs continually and affect each other Example:Crawling requires Physical strength; Intellectual coordination; Emotional/Social motivation
Principles of Development 5 . Development continues throughout life • Sometimes it happen quickly sometimes it progresses slowly. • It does not stop at a certain age Example: Reading is a lifelong skill that develops throughout life
Activity • Finish “Positive &Negative Influences on Development” foldable • Each group will choose one area of INFANT development (PIES) • Together you will research this area and create a presentation to the class. • Must contain at least 4 needs within each area • Must contain illustrations, photos, video clips of examples.
