Types of Muscle Contractions. Providing different ways of Strength Training.
ISOTONIC. • Muscle length shortens under tension ie concentric. Muscle changes from “long +Thin” to “Short + Fat”. (Press ups or bench pressing using weights).
All Skeletal muscle have 2 points of attachment – point of origin • and point of insertion. • Point of origin is fixed does not move unlike point of insertion. • e.g point of origin bicep – shoulder – point of insertion elbow. • Point of origin hamstring – hip – point of insertion knee. • N.B in all isotonic contractions points of insertion moves closer to • point of origin. • e.g Press ups, dips, pull ups. etc.
Point of Origin (Fixed) Point of Insertion
ISOMETRIC:- • Muscle length remains the same whilst under tension. i.e. no shortening of the muscle. e.g tug of war or scrummaging in rugby
Strength tests in competitions such as world strongest • man e.g holding car batteries in front of you at arms • length or bundles of bananas in each arm. • Disadvantages: • Increase blood pressure in head (dangerous!!) • Not “specific” to many sporting events since there no • muscle movement involved. • Advantages: • * A proven way of increasing muscle size quickly.
ISOKINETIC • Muscle tension remains constant (the same) throughout the full range of movement. i.e Outer – mid + inner range Outer mid inner range Disadvantages: developed only available on hitech expensive machines only available Sky T.V. gyms or sports clubs.
