  4. Essential Question What are the various types of governments and what makes them different?

  5. 1. Democratic 51% - 48% Where a government is elected by voting in elections by the people. Examples: United States and France Con: slow in making decisions

  6. 2. Theocracy Government is controlled by religious leaders and laws. Example: Iran

  7. 3. Oligarchy • A government were only a few people have power and control the country. • royalty, wealth, education, military, race • Example: South Africa decades ago

  8. 4. Autocracy • Government by a single person having unlimited power and domination; despotism. Quick at making decisions • Dictators • Example: Adolf Hitler in Germany

  9. 5. Monarchy • A monarchy has a king or queen as head of the country. Their position is based on royalty and passed down through heirs. Power stays in the family. • Example: Saudi Arabia and England

  10. 6. Anarchy • When there is no government. This can happen when a government is destroyed and rival groups fight to take its place. • Chaotic because no government to protect the people • Example: Somalia twenty years ago

  16. Economic Systems • Economy –the production and consumption of goods/resources and services within a country • Four Types of Economic Systems • 1. Traditional • 2. Command • 3. Market/Capitalist • 4. Mixed

  17. Supply and Demand This is what guides economies Supply – amount of goods/services produced by sellers Demand – amount of goods/services that consumers wish to purchase

  19. 1. Traditional • Based on tradition and custom • Centers on family and tribe • Resources are allocated based on inheritance • Farming, hunting, gathering

Command • Govt makes all decisions • Govt owns resources, sets prices of goods/services, and determines what/how much to produce • Factories meet quotas (govt tells them how much of something to produce) • Not about making a profit • No competition • Consumers lack choices and have little freedom

Market/Capitalist • Individuals/businesses makes all decisions • Individuals/businesses own resources, set prices of goods/services, and determine what/how much to produce • Profit will increase work, not quotas • Competition determines price and increases the quality of products • Economic freedom

  22. 4. Mixed Combination of Command and Market Govt and individuals share decision-making process Govt regulates production to protect producers and consumers Resources are owned by individuals
