Essential Question What are the various types of economies and what makes them different?
Economic Systems • Economy –the production and consumption of goods/resources and services within a country • Four Types of Economic Systems • 1. Traditional • 2. Command • 3. Market/Capitalist • 4. Mixed
Supply and Demand This is what guides economies Supply – amount of goods/services produced by sellers Demand – amount of goods/services that consumers wish to purchase
Supply and Demand Example • Cellphones • Computers
1. Traditional • Based on tradition and custom • Centers on family and tribe • Resources are allocated based on inheritance • Farming, hunting, gathering
2. Command • Govt makes all decisions • Govt owns resources, sets prices of goods/services, and determines what/how much to produce • Factories meet quotas (govt tells them how much of something to produce) • Not about making a profit • No competition • Consumers lack choices and have little freedom
3. Market/Capitalist • Individuals/businesses makes all decisions • Individuals/businesses own resources, set prices of goods/services, and determine what/how much to produce • Profit will increase work, not quotas • Competition determines price and increases the quality of products • Economic freedom
4. Mixed Combination of Command and Market Govt and individuals share decision-making process Govt regulates production to protect producers and consumers Resources are owned by individuals
