E N D
What is a Thesis Statement? • A sentence that tells the audience the main idea of the essay. • It contains three essential parts: your subject, which is the who or what; your idea, which is what you discovered; the how or why, which is how you know this or why you know this about your subject. • The thesis does NOT contain any facts from the literary work. • REMEMBER!! It is a roadmap of your essay: where you are going with your idea and why.
Structuring The Thesis Sentence… • (author) wrote (title) to convince (audience) that (Purpose/position 1) and (Purpose/position2). • Example: Lupinacci wrote “Jeter: Put Your Money Where Your Fans Are” to encourage celebrity figures to support their local communities and to make a difference in the lives of young people. (springboard, writing workshop 9)
Structuring The Thesis Sentence… • Author uses literary device 1 and literary device 2 to convey theme. • Example: Langston Hughes uses similes and metaphors in his poem “Dream Deferred” to convey that individuals must try and follow their dreams in order not to become disillusioned with life. • Topic + Idea + why or how. • Example: Because of his insatiable lust for blood and violent actions, Grendel represents unadulterated evil in the epic poem Beowulf by Unknown.
from Outline to First Draft… • Introduction: • Sentence 1. Subject sentence: what is the work about that leads to theme. • Sentence2. Theme sentence which leads to the thesis. • Sentence 3. Thesis sentence. • Body Paragraph (s): • Topic Sentence • Transition, Concrete Detail. • Commentary 1 • Commentary 2 • Conclusion • Final thought about your topic. • One to two sentences of commentary. This part repeats for every concrete detail until you can blend commentary and concrete detail together.
