  5. Consider the challenge of reading the Bible: • Start with ten people, to represent all the people in the world.

  6. Think of these ten people : • Of these ten, three are illiterate. They cannot read or write.

  7. Start with ten people. Three are illiterate. • Two others only went to school for three or four years.

  8. Start with ten people. Three are illiterate. Two went to school for a short time. • Three others completed high school, but they rarely read after they finished school.

  9. So how many are now reading the Bible? • Nearly two-thirds of the world’s people are oral learners. • They prefer to hear a story rather than read a book. • But there is still another challenge.

  11. About this last challenge: • Many people do not have the option of reading the Bible in their native language. There are about 6900 languages in the world today. At least 2000 of these languages still need a translation of the Bible so that people can read the Bible in their heart language.

  13. What are characteristics of oral learners? • They learning by observing and imitating. • They think and talk about events, not words. • They store information in stories. Their library is their memory. • They memorize information handed down from the past • They enjoy drama, dance, stories, proverbs and sayings.

Characteristics of oral learners • They are less analytical. • The process of sharing the story is as important as the story itself. • They often like to receive information in group settings with strong community fellowship. • They are just as intelligent as highly literate people, but they may need more time to learn new things.

  15. How does Matthew 28:18-20 apply to oral learners? • Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

  18. Storying • One approach to teaching oral learners (and the rest of us as well) is to teach by storying. • Can you give a summary of last week’s sermon? • Can you repeat a story that you learned as a child?

  21. Steps in storying • Tell the story. • Repeat the story with a drama, puppets, dance or posters. • Ask observation questions, like “What did you see?” • Ask interpretation questions, such as “Why did this happen?”

  22. Steps in storying • Finally, ask application questions. “Has anything like that ever happened to you?” “What would you have done in his place?” • Have them practice telling the story with each other. • Ask them to tell the story to their family and neighbors during the next week.
