  3. Upon finishing this workshop, you will be able to: • Understand the Difference Between the Colon and the Semicolon in regards to Academic Writing

  4. Sentence Type #1: The Simple Sentence • What is a COLON?? • What is a Semicolon? • What is the difference between the two??

  5. The Colon Use a COLON after an independent clause when introducing a list. The catering facility offersthe following entrees: fried catfish, grilled chicken, pan-seared salmon, and sirloin steak.

  6. Common Problems with Colons and Lists….. TO BE Prepositional Phrases

  7. One more thing…. Colons and Appositives…. He had one great love in his live: himself.

  8. The Semi Colon • Between two independent clauses • Matthew did not accept the job offer; he wanted to go to graduate school. • Before Connectors(Conjunctive Adverbs and Transition Phrases) • Surfing is dangerous; nevertheless, thousands of people surf everyday in California.
