Upon finishing this workshop, you will be able to: • Work with our understanding of Academic Sentences to understand what grammar mistakes are commonly made. • Use your knowledge of Simple Sentence Structure to expand your knowledge of more complex academic sentences. • Began to understand the comma and semi-colon…..and beyond!!!!!

Sentence Type #1: The Simple Sentence • Subject/Verb: Fresh Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius. • 2 Subjects/Verb: Fresh water and sea water do not boil at the same temperature. • Subject/2 Verbs: Fresh Water freezes at zero degrees Celsius and boils at 100 degrees Celsius. • What other combinations can you think of??

  6. Sentence Type #2: The Compound Sentence • 1. Coordinator (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so: FAN BOYS) • Too much sun damages the skin, but many people do not use sunscreen • 2. Semicolon and Conjunctive Adverb (See Photocopy) • Too much sun damages the skin; therefore, we should remember to use plenty of sunscreen. • 3. Semicolon • Too much sun damages the skin; we should remember to use plenty of sun screen
