  2. About Jane Long Jane Herbert Long • Born: July 23, 1798 • Died: December 30, 1880 • Hometown: Charles County, Maryland • 1811 she moved to Nachtez in the Mississippi Territory there she married James Long • She later followed James Long to Texas Jane Long

Important Things Jane Long did Mother of Texas • Jane Long had opened 2 inns, 1 of them was the meeting place for many Texas leaders. • She had opened a boarding house. • She had run a prosperous boarding school. • Sometimes claimed to be first English speaking women to give birth in Texas • Jane Long Elementary School named in her honor • A marker was also placed in her honor on 1936

Other historical figures Jane Long interacted with. • Jane Longs husband was James Long. • James Long took over Texas twice but later was captured by Mexican soldiers when he was traveling to recruit a pirate. He was “accidently” killed by soldier. • He was the real first president of Texas, still under Spanish rule.
