Mouse Trap Cars Expectations and Definitions
Tech Ed Mousetrap Project Contract I _________________________ do here by state that I will not inappropriately use the mousetrap that I have been given for this project. I will not snap other people, I will not throw it in the classroom, and I will not use it in a joking manner. I understand that the consequences for doing so will be at a minimum, placement in DMC, and could even result in suspension. I also understand that if I violate this rule, I will not be allowed to complete the project, and may be banned form working on the CO2 car project.
Rubric Good 15 points Better 20 points Best 25 points Total Craftsmanship Poorly built, bad alignment, lots of friction, and lots of breakdowns. Well aligned, little friction and minor repairs needed. Well built, little friction, good alignment, and no breakdowns. Blue-Print Diagram of car completed, but not labeled and there is no explanation of how it works. Diagram of car completed and labeled, but there is no explanation of how it works. Diagram of car completed and labeled and includes an explanation of how the car works Distance traveled Does not travel Six Feet. Travels the Six Feet required for the competition. Travels more than Six Feet in a straight line. Housekeeping Your tools are not returned every day, your area is left messy, and raw materials are left out. Your tools are returned and area is clean, but you have to be reminded to do so occasionally. Your tools are returned, your work area is clean, and no raw materials are left out.

Vocabulary • Write the following terms in your journal • Skip a few lines between each one • Energy: • Potential Energy: • Kinetic Energy: • Transfer of energy:
Energy • Energy is what allows us to do work • Energy = Force X Distance
Potential Energy • Energy that an object has due to its position in the Earth's gravitational field • Energy at rest • Chemicals are also a form of potential energy
Kinetic Energy • Energy an object has due to its mass and velocity (or movement) • Energy in motion
Transfer of Energy • The changing potential energy into kinetic energy, or changing kinetic energy into potential energy • An example would be chemicals (such as gasoline) store energy as Potential Energy, and transfer it into Kinetic Energy when released (or burned). • Another example would be a mousetrap, when you are setting it, energy transfersfrom Kinetic Energy into Potential Energy.

Vocabulary • Write the following terms in your journal • Skip a few lines between each one • Force: • Motor: • Torque: • Momentum: • Friction:
Force • A push or pull capable of changing the state of motion of an object
Motor • A device that converts energy into mechanical power
Torque • Torque can be thought of as a "rotational force" • Torque is measured by the force applied to a lever, multiplied by the distance from the lever's fulcrum • Torque = radius X Force
Momentum • Mass in motion • The product of the mass of an object times its velocity p = m X v Momentum = Mass X Velocity
Friction • The resistance force that occurs when two surfaces travel along each other while being forced together

Vocabulary • Write the following terms in your journal • Skip a few lines between each one • Newton’s First Law: • Simple Machine: • Levers
Newton’s First Law • A body remains at rest or in motion with a constant velocity unless acted upon by an external force • Or a body in motion stays in motion and a body at rest stays at rest unless acted upon by another force.

Designing your Car • Now it is time to think about how you are going to build your Mousetrap Car. • Look at all the pieces in the package you were given. Be sure to think about all the pieces you were given, and how they can be used on your car.
Start Building • Once you have finished your blueprints, you can begin to build your version of the BETTER MOUSETRAP CAR!
