  1. Types of Chemical Reactions Chem-To-Go Lesson 21 Unit 5

  2. SYNTHESIS REactions • DEFINITION: two or more compounds or elements go together to build a more complex compound • GENERIC EQUATION: A + B  AB • EXAMPLE: 2Al + 3Br2  2AlBr3

  3. Decomposition reactions DEFINITION: a single compound breaks down into 2 or more elements or compounds • GENERIC EQUATION: AB  A + B • EXAMPLE: H2O2 H2O + O2

  4. Combustion of hydrocarbon reactions • GENERIC EQUATION: CxHy + O2 CO2 + H2O • EXAMPLE: CH4 + 2O2  Co2 + 2H2O DEFINITION: diatomic oxygen combines with a hydrocarbon to release energy in the form of heat and light

  5. Single replacement reactions DEFINITION: a single element reacts with a compound and replaces one of the compound elements • GENERIC EQUATION: A + BX --> AX + B • METAL EXAMPLE: K + CuSO4 K2SO4 + Cu • NONMETAL EXAMPLE: Cl2 + KBr  KCl + Br2

  6. Double replacement reactions DEFINITION: an ionic compound reacts with another ionic compound; the ions switch partners. • GENERIC EQUATION: AX + BY --> AY + BX • EXAMPLE: CoCl2 + Na3(PO4)2 Co3(PO4)2 + NaCl
