Implementation FOCUS of the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics LearnBop 2013
Familiarize Familiarize yourself with the standards by reading the entire document from beginning to end! • Read the often overlooked text included in the standards that conveys relevant content and conceptual understanding information including the following: Preface Sidebars Glossary Tables • Remember the standards include both content and practice.
Overcome Overcome the desire to make a checklist of the standards and mark them off as already “covered” by your current curriculum. • The words may be the same, but are they? The standards require than just teaching procedures. • Are there opportunities for in-depth teaching of concepts? • Are students engaged in the subject matter through the inclusion of the Mathematical Practices?
Consider Consider the content outlined for your grade/course teaching assignment and identify what you are teaching well. • Look closely at the critical focus areas for instruction in grades K – 8 in the standards and/or the Pathways for high school at http://www.achieve.org/mathpathways . • How can you learn more about content that you’re not teaching well or that you may not be currently teaching? • Plan professional learning targeting this content. • Collaborate with colleagues currently teaching content that will shift to your grade/course.
Utilize Utilize sound resources to help you better understand the standards including the following: • Common Core State Standards Progressions Documents http://ime.math.arizona.edu/progressions/ • Illustrative Mathematics http://www.illustrativemathematics.org/ • Tools for the Common Core Standards http://commoncoretools.me/ • National Council of Teachers of Mathematics www.nctm.org
Standardize Standardize your teaching by including the Standards for Mathematical Practice now. • The Mathematical Practices • describe “habits of mind” that mathematics educators should seek to develop in all K – 12 students. • provide opportunities for students to engage with the mathematics subject matter throughout their K – 12 years and beyond. • provide an avenue for developing and/or demonstrating conceptual understanding. • are not all eight intended to be included in every lesson, though some lessons may include more than one mathematical practice.
