  4. Historical Fiction • A story set in the past that tells about events that did or possibly could happen. • A story about a girl who lived in colonial times is an example of historical fiction.

  5. Myth • An ancient story often meant to explain the mysteries of life or nature. • A story about a Hawaiian goddess who creates volcanoes is an example of a myth.

  6. Realistic Fiction • A story that portrays characters, settings, and events that could happen in real life. • A story about a boy’s interesting entry in a science fair is an example of realistic fiction.

  7. Tall Tale • A humorous story that tells about impossible happenings, exaggerating the accomplishments of the hero. • A story about a cowboy who is twenty feet tall and uses a live rattlesnake for a rope is an example of a tall tale.
