BUS 110A – Fundamentals of MIS • Role of IT in today’s business environment • Introduction to database concepts • Extension of business application programming using Visual Basic and introduction into Visual Web Developer • Overview of application / project development including conceptualization, design and implementation
BUS 110B - Systems Analysis and Design • Fundamentals of Systems Analysis and Design • Understanding and applying the System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) approach • Using various techniques (e.g., physical DFDs, program structure charts, data models, dialog flow diagrams and UML (Unified Modelling Language) to design system programs, database, and interfaces. • Plan construction, testing, and installation activities and discuss issues for a systems development project.
BUS 111 – Networking & Data Communications • Understanding various forms of communications technology in business • Fundamental concepts of networking principles based on layered network models such as OSI • Introduction to Network Management issues including network security • Researching and writing a concise report discussing how to apply specific communication technologies to a specific business situation
BUS 112 –Database Management Systems • Understanding the DBMS environment from stand-alone systems to client/server architecture to distributed database systems. • Creating Entity-Relational (E-R) models from a given set of business objectives • Developing a Relational Database from both an E-R diagram and a set of business documents. • Constructing and retrieving data from a relational database utilizing both SQL and Query by example • Implementing a relational database in Microsoft Access with Visual Basic
BUS 119A – Practicum in MIS orBUS 119H – Honors Practicum in MIS • Learning the fundamental concepts of project management by developing and maintaining project plans for a real-world project • Developing organizational skills through constructing teams and delegating tasks to satisfy the required skill sets and time frames required • Managing a real client relationship through all steps of the collaboration process to design, develop and deliver the IT project • Discussing state-of-the-art technical topics relevant to MIS and business organizations
BUS 119B – Business Strategy & Information Systems • Articulating the multiple roles of information systems within an enterprise, both conceptually and in terms of specific company examples • Conducting a systematic, structured analysis of the factors in utilizing information systems successfully for organizational benefit • Discussing information systems management issues, such as organization and personnel, user relationships, financial justification, integration of IS and business strategies, and the role of information systems in reengineering and TQM
