Intro to Human sexuality Final Project FHS 2450 -049 Kyle Harmon
Featured FilmsCompare and contrast • American Pie • Juno • Anger Management
A summary of Juno • The movie Juno is about a girl who is still in high school that gets pregnant on accident. At first she believes abortion is the right option. After a trip to the clinic she quickly changes her mind and decided to give the baby up for adoption. The plot followers her from when she gets her pregnancy test all the way up till the birth. Its shows the real struggle some young girls go through while being pregnant in high school.
A summary of American Pie • The movie American Pie is based off a couple of high school guys and there struggle to get laid before they head off to college. The peer pressure has gotten to them and they make a pact to lose their virginity by prom night. Humor brings the movie along as you watch the 5 friends attempt anything to get it done.
A summary of Anger Management • The movie anger management is about a character who has hidden anger deep inside him that his girlfriend wants gone. She sets up a plan to have Buddy the anger specialist invade Dave's life and help him with his anger issues. The problem is at first, Dave doesn't’t believe he has anger issues, but as the movie goes along he slowly realizes how unhappy he is with himself. Humor and love bring the movie together with amazing actors and a good vibe.
Comparison • Sex • American Pie: The entire movie is based off of sex and getting laid. In high school I feel there is an extreme amount of peer pressure to lose your virginity(as a guys stand point) • Juno: The main characters have sex and create a baby on accident. The movie is based off one choice of having unprotected sex • Anger Managing: its not based off sex but plenty of times the movie refers to sex. For instance it refers to if penis size matters and the main couple was not having a good healthy sex life.
Comparison • Confusion: • American Pie: The boys were confused on many topics for instance how to even have or do sex right, when is the right time for sex and with who, when are you for sure in love, is losing your virginity important? • Juno: To have the baby or not, keep it or put it up for adoption, how to tell your parents, is she in love, peoples reactions to her around school • Anger Management: why everyone is out to get him, why his world seems to be falling apart, why his anger coach is a lunatic, where did his life start fall apart
Contrast/relationship to class • American Pie • Sex sex sex = main topic of movie • Target audience:16-25 years of age • Peer pressure, fitting a role ( jock or geek) there is multiple characters so everyone can relate, embarrassment in public, sex positions, pleasuring correctly, sex problems like premature ejaculation, using the word love correctly, father and son discussions, sexual behavior, relationship communication, and use of contraceptives • The movie is actually filled with a ton of important facts and helps answer frequent questions teenagers often have relating to sex education but in a humors way. After viewing this movie in a student mindset I appreciate the movie a little more because it shows the extremes of what can go right or wrong.
Contrast/relationship to class • Juno • Main topic = Teen pregnancy • Target Audience = teens to everyone • Life in High school being pregnant, abortion, adoption, birth, pregnancy test, was the time right, relationship communication, “marriage rules”, responsibility, contraceptives, dating, ultra sounds, others negative and positive reactions, the experience of birth/pregnancy, sexual behavior, LOVE • Juno is an amazing story that shows the real life struggles of being pregnant and still in high school. The acting is on point, the situations feel real making it easy for the audience to relate. For instance in the beginning Juno is walking through the halls and is dogging people left and right, when she is pregnant everyone in the school moves out of her way and stares at her. In real life that absolutely happens, I feel many people will look at a youngster in discuss if they are young and pregnant. I took a liking to when Juno was speaking with her dad about love, her dad said this about love. “Look, in my opinion the best thing you can do is find a person who loves you for exactly what you are. Good mood, bad mood, ugly, pretty, handsome, what-have-you. The right person is still going to think the sun shines out of your ass. That's the kind of person that's worth sticking with.”
Contrast/relationship to class • Anger Management • Main Topic = Hidden Angers that can destroy us • Gender issues, sex, relationships and communication, jealousy, embarrassment as a kid, sexual difficulties • The movies first scene is when Dave was about to get his first kiss as a kid, un-expectantly another kid pulls down his pants in the act and the shear embarrassment ruins Dave in the long run. One bad moment or incident in a child's life can cause serous effects in later life. Dave's problems was he let people walk all over him and never spoke up for himself until he would snap aka not a good way to go about your anger. “Temper is the only thing you cant get rid of by losing it.” Dave’s girlfriend was worried for him and their future, to correct it she sought help and in the end it works out. The main message I can relate to this class is communication in a relationship is 1000% needed to be successful. Our textbook talks about the gender challenged character who is a transsexual prostitute by day and a Male security guard by night. Everyone is different and some people struggle with gender issues, the Transsexual’s acting is really good and helps open the audiences eyes that some people have way bigger problems then their own.
End note • I want to start by saying I've gained a lot more then I thought from this assignment. I enjoyed watching, laughing, and learning from these movies. The films were all about different topics but they still manage to relate to one another in terms of Human Sexuality. Even if the content of the movies could be seen as inappropriate they all had good and strong overall messages to give to the viewers. These movies help answer a lot of questions or problems that people can relate to throughout life. It comes down to you as a person who makes the choices that matter in your own life, don’t let others be your voice, Laugh and Love the life you live!
