LETS TAKE A TRIP • a trip to the mid 1800’s • a trip where we meet one of the most influential people in history • a trip where we find out exactly why this library place has numbers!

Lets get to know Dewey Name: Melville Dewey Age: 162 Pet Peeve: Disorganization Claim to Fame: Getting your library together!
What’s so great about this system? • It keeps things neat • It keeps things consistent • It helps you find everything you need!
First things first • Lets review the 10 categories that Dewey created.
000- 099 • General subjects. This could include world records, web design and 2.0, just about anything that doesn’t fit into the other 9 categories.
100-199 • The 100’s include ANYTHING involving Philosophy.
200- 299 • This includes anything dealing with religion. It can be anything from books on religious thought, how religion affects society, to simple books that explain exactly what the different religions are. Anything religion is in the 200’s.
300-399 • This is a HUGE section that includes all of social sciences. Anytime you need things on current events this is the place to go.
400- 499 • Hola!The 400’s is where you can stop by to learn a language!
500- 599 • This has everything you need for all of your Science classes. You can get ideas here for Science Fair projects, or look up facts for your Environmental Science class
600- 699 700- 799 Arts and recreation. This is the best section in some people’s opinion! It has everything sports and everything leisure. • Technology! But not just cell phones and computers, this includes books on how things work; cake decorating, and even infectious diseases!
800- 899 900- 999 The 900’s is the world at your fingertips! Anything geographic or historical is in this section. • The 800’s is your one stop shop for all things literature. We have poetry books and anthology, but better yet, we have reading companions and help guides to get you through your agonizing Shakespeare days! How to look up a book • Go to Destiny • Type in what you want to find • Write down the call # on a sheet of paper • Venture out into the library!
where is my book? • Find the appropriate book shelf. • Look for the number first • Look at the letters • Remember decimal rules.
Lets practice A call # is simply the number on the spine of the book
