Learning Areas Levels Objectives Software Description English as a foreign language; topics: My Life, My School, Free Time, My Country 10 – 11 years The proposed project is an initial activity for a long-term cooperation between schools from different countries and for better understanding each others‘ educational systems. Using skills and knowledge of the beginners‘ English both pupils and their teachers will discover and learn about the culture and life of children from another country MS Class Serve. MS Office, Zonerr „Children in one country create and distribute via Internet „teaching“ materials about their own country and lifestyle for children in another country, and „teach“ them in this way some points of interest about their country.“ Authors Mr. Milan Hausner, Mrs. Hana Reynoldsová Junior Language School, Prague, Czech Republic, 2005
Teacher Planning and Management – 1/6 Background to the Project School Junior Language School, Prague 3 (JLS) is a leading Czech school in ICT implementation into education. Since 2004 JLS has been an administrator of the web portal for an Associated School Project UNESCO on http://skoly-unesco.cz, where you can also find the English portal of JLS. The teachers The teachers have been teaching English to various age groups of pupils, starting from 9 year olds, as the very beginners, and finishing with the 15 year olds, who are the oldest group of children in the school. For this project a certain amount of computing knowledge is required, as completion and distribution of the materials is done via Internet. This part is presented in 6 slides.
Teacher Planning and Management – 2/6 Background to the Project Project goals The main goal of the project is to develop children‘s knowledge of English in a natural way by helping them to realize that they can share a lot of their language skills and general interests with children of the same age but from different cultural environment. As most of the children nowadays enjoy playing on the computers, this project will provide an opportunity to join together fun and learning. They will use both their knowledge of English and computers to learn about their “schoolmates” from a different country. The planning and origin of the project The project started as a natural continuation of children‘s teaching materials. The curriculum context of the project Textbooks New Project in English by Tom Hutchinson following the curriculum for younger pupils. The project fully complies with the rules of the EU for the international twinning of schools, and therefore after its piloting, it should be submitted for financing next year via e-twinning program according to the regulation of this program.
Teacher Planning and Management – 3/6 Background to the Project The technology context For the preparatory part no special technology is necessary. For the “learning part” children will use computers in the school computer room. The final “testing part” is ideally realized in the computer room again, using the MS CLASS software. Microsoft Class Server is an advanced tool for e-learning education, as well as for distribution of educational materials to pupils. It was originally meant mainly for school purposes and for direct teaching. However, there are various features which can be also efficiently employed for the international school projects. This tool can help to support new linkage among European schools and to support international understanding. Teachers can easily learn how to navigate and use the program, and the distribution system supports the efforts of the teacher for creation of efficient links among distant classes in two European countries.
Teacher Planning and Management – 4/6 • The project management • The project is managed by the English group teachers and the headmaster of JLS. • The project is structured in 3 parts: • Preparation • Implementation • Assessment Preparation • Preparation of the project can be divided into three phases (see further slides for more details). Phase 1 can be excluded depending on the pupils‘ experience in English. • An overview of the three phases is given in the table below:
Teacher Planning and Management – 5/6Preparation Phase 1Brief Overview of Grammar Required
Teacher Planning and Management – 6/6 Phases 2 and 3 of the project In phase 2 pupils individually start gathering the information on each topic from all possible sources. (Please refer to the section on Classroom Teacher Guide for a description of the range of topics to be collected as well as the approach for this activity.) This is an important part when the pupils realize what they already know, where they can look for more information and how to „process“ this information. Phase 3 is mostly about team work. Pupils will be divided into groups and each group will prepare part of the „teaching“ material of one topic. At the end the groups will come together as one team to finalise the full set of „teaching“ material of that topic. Afterwards the groups will combine in the preparation of other topics. The teacher will decide whether to keep the same groups of pupils or to change the pupils in the groups for each topic. The success of the project depends on the pupils‘ ability to work for the team, be part of it.
Work Samples, Teacher and Student Reflection Student Work Samples: Clicking on the Word document icons below you can see some of the pupils‘ work. This was only a preparation for the actual topic, so these were completed individually. There are letters for a pen friend where children could use their imagination and write about themselves as if they are a famous person or celebrity. These letters were the first part of a project called „My World“. You can view samples of some of the completed projects by clicking on the picture . Documents
Teaching Resources and Implementation – 1/2 • For 1 topic we expect following time requirements: • 3 weeks – preparation • 1 week – exchange of the materials and learning • 1 week – assessment and feedback • That means that for 4 topics we will need in total 20 weeks. • Preparation – time requirements • Our fifth classes have 3 lessons per week. Each lesson lasts 45 minutes. For the project some rearrangement of the teaching schedule will be necessary. We will assign 1 lesson per week for the project, the other two lessons will be dedicated to the regular teaching. That‘s why the teacher has to consider the acceleration of the regular teaching. The contents of the „project“ lesson will be following: • Lesson 1 – explaining the goals for preparation, scope of the topic, „brainstorming“ ideas • Lesson 2 – draft presentation of results of each group, feedback, comments from all team members • Lesson 3 – completion of the materials, eventual rearrangement for the topic 1 This part is presented in 2 slides.
Teaching Resources and Implementation – 2/2 b) Exchange of the materials The materials for the completed topic will be exchanged via MS Class Server. Pupils on both sides, using the computers, will learn about the partner‘s topic. c) Assessment and feedback Pupils will sit for a short test, again using MS Class Server. Teachers on both sides will evaluate the tests and announce the results. After the test, it will be necessary to talk to the pupils and find out how the learning contributed to the pupils‘ current knowledge. It is recommended to share feedback from the pupils‘ learning experience with the partner‘s teachers, as some corrections and improvements for the next topic can be done. There could also be a possibility for feedback between pupils from both countries on a peer to peer basis that could stimulate the pupils for the preparation of the next topic.
Assessment and Standards • The assessment will have to be done in two parts: • assessment of the preparation of materials • assessment of the use of partner‘s materials • The most important aspect for the assessment is setting the evaluation criteria: • Team work • Successful solution of the project • Especially the second criterion can be interpreted in many different ways: stick to the topic, simplicity of the description, intelligibility, grammar, etc. • Mistakes in preparation of project materials are expected, general knowledge of English is the important fact. We must not forget the role of a teacher to bring materials to a necessary standard. • The project is focused not only on the improvement of English but also on the team-building and team work according to the topics.
Classroom Teacher Guide 1/2 The main motto for this school project is that learning can be fun for both pupils and teachers especially when crossing national borders. Such project can be organized in quite short period of time and the first achievements should be received in 6 months terms. An international project has only got sense if it finishes in a face-to-face meeting between the partners. If the communication goes only through the net, it mostly finishes very quickly. That is why this project also involves mutual exchange of both teachers and pupils from the two countries. This part is presented in 2 slides.
Classroom Teacher Guide 2/2Children on both sides will prepare „teaching“ materials about their own country – 8 files at maximum with topics like my country, living conditions, free time, my school, my house, nature and weather conditions, sports, jokes etc. Through their teacher (now becoming a teacher for the pupils of the partner) they will share these materials distributed via MS Class Server. The other teacher will do the same with the materials produced by his/her pupils. The „teaching“ materials and the tests will include pictures, text and all possible media. After sharing them, the second group will prepare a summary which will be published on the web page of the project. Two or three online conferences on interactive boards will be prepared, as well as a direct MSN (Messenger Instant Chat) on various topics. Final selection of topics will be set maximally on 4.Each topic will have three parts: - Information - Test - AnswersIdeally, the project teacher leaders of each country wouldagree on the same list of topics that their pupils will then develop into a series of „teaching“ materials.
Staff Developer Guide The project is based on the teaching materials which we use for our pupils starting with their English. That means that the project does not require a lot of extra work for the teacher at the beginning. When the pupils are prepared for creating the first materials, there is the starting point for each group teacher to find the right motivation for himself/herself and his/her pupils and prepare the „teaching“ materials as a competition. Those materials which will come out as the best ones, can be then used for „educating“ the other partner. It is really important for the teachers to keep in mind the project targets from the beginning, as they can co-operate in the groups and set the right goals and topics.
