LL.B Threshold Learning Outcomes (TLO’s) • Knowledge (legal) – principles and concepts; • Ethics and professional responsibility - understanding approaches to ethical decision-making; recognise ethical issues; exercise professional judgement; • Thinking skills – identify issues; apply legal reasoning; critical analysis supporting reasoned choices
LL.B Threshold Learning Outcomes (TLO’s) • Research skills - synthesise relevant factual, legal and policy issues • Communication and collaboration – for both legal and non-legal audiences; collaborate effectively • Self-management – learn and work independently; assess their own capabilities, use feedback and support personal and professional development
Principles of adult learning • Active participation: learners are actively involved in the learning process. • Meaningful participation: they can relate the material to their existing knowledge and experiences • Repeated practice: learning is supported by frequent opportunities to practice and apply new skills and knowledge • Holistic learning: grouping tasks together enables the learner to relate the training to actual practices
Principles of adult learning • Multi-sense learning: two or more senses are used in the learning method. This is more effective than learning methods which only use one sense • Feedback: feedback is provided to reinforce the learning • Reward: rewards reinforce learning • Primacy and recency: people have a tendency to recall those things they have learnt first and last in a sequence
PRAGMATIST: ‘If it works, it’s good!’ • Keen to try out new ideas and techniques in practice • Practical, down-to-earth approach • Business like – get straight to the point • Act quickly and confidently • Practical, down-to-earth • See problems as challenges
ACTIVIST: ‘I’ll try anything once!’ • Get fully involved in new experiences • Enjoy the here and now • Act first, think later • Enjoy brainstorming • Bored with implementation and long term consolidation • Unbiased, open minded, enthusiastic
THEORIST: ‘If it’s logical, it’s good!’ • Integrate observations and facts into theories • Logical, vertical thinker • Detached, analytical, objective • Tend to ask exploratory questions • Interested in principles, models, theories • May be rigid in approach
REFLECTOR: ‘Be cautious’ • Stand back to ponder experience • Prefer to observe from different perspectives • Conduct research, investigate and assemble information • Prepare carefully • Postpone reaching a definitive conclusion • Think first, act later
