Contents • Situation • Ethical dilemma • Where is the line concerning ethical behavior in this area? • Examples • Conclusion: code of ethics
Situation: Visual Fiction • Just as story telling could portray the "truth" with an accurate accounting of the facts, it could just as easily become fiction. • Fake and manipulated photographs - visual fiction - began circulating not long after the invention of photography. http://www.graphicdesignblog.org/images/photo-amz/image17.jpg
Ethical Dilemma • Where is the line between proper "fixing" and outright "lying”? • When does the pursuit of aesthetics violate our ethics? http://www.nextnature.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/stinejensen_530.jpg
The important questions when manipulating an image ask: • Why are we doing this, and what are our purposes and intentions? • Where do we draw the line? • What is ethical in the digital manipulation and enhancement of a photo?
Two different situations • 1st situation: If the picture is taken for artistic purposes only- anything goes because only aesthetic considerations come into play. http://www.astropix.com/IMAGES/J_DIGIT/ETHICS/MOONCOMP.JPG
Situations continued… • 2nd: If the photo was taken for documentary or journalistic reasons, the responsibility is to faithfully and truthfully interpret and represent reality in an image as well as it can be understood. http://www.snopes.com/photos/images/kerry03.jpg
Where’s The Balance There is a fine line between digital manipulation to be deceptive and digital manipulation to more accurately portray the reality of a situation/experience
Digital Manipulation Code of Ethics • “Accurate representation is the benchmark of our profession. • Altering the editorial content ... is a breach of the ethical standards recognized by the National Press Photographers Association.”
