Immunogen versus Antigen Immunogen Antigen (Ag) Binds/reacts to the products of the immune response Can be an immunogen • Anything that induces a specific immune response • A piece of the immunogen can be an antigen • So on the whole all immunogens are antigens These terms are frequently used synonymously!

Adjuvant versus Hapten Hapten Adjuvant Can be more complex Pharmacological Typically not conjugated and does not induce an immune response on its even when part of the combined vaccine • Small • More likely chemical • When conjugated can induce an immune response • Anti-hapten antibodies • The hapten becomes an antigen
