But this also leaves them open to self-loosening and preload loss. The effects of bolt loosening vary depending on the application. A single loose bolt can stop an entire manufacturing facility in its tracks and cost a business millions of dollars, while in other instances missing bolts can constitute a serious safety threat. What causes bolts to loosen, then? In general, slackening and spontaneous loosening are the two main causes.
