  2. Over the Next 30 Years, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Predicts for the San Francisco Bay Area : • >63% Probability of a 6.7+Magnitude Earthquake • Probability is Highest for the Hayward Fault - 31% • Second Highest is the San Andreas Fault - 21% UCOP September 2010 Safety Meeting

Prepare • UCOP Staff Must Prepare for the Next Major Earthquake • Magnitude 6.7+ Considered a Major Earthquake by USGS • Loma Prieta (Oct. 17, 1989) – 6.9 Magnitude • 63 Deaths, 3700 Injuries, and >$6 Billion in Damages • Northridge (1994) – 6.7 Magnitude • 20 Deaths and $20 Billion in Damages UCOP September 2010 Safety Meeting

Cover! Hold On! • Organizations: Practice Other Aspects of Emergency Plan • UCOP – Will Be A Participant UCOP September 2010 Safety Meeting

  5. October 21, 2010 at 10:21 AM • At 1111 Franklin Street and the Kaiser Building • PA System will Announce “Earthquake Drill” • UCOP Staff will “Drop! Cover! Hold On!” • Other UCOP Sites at Leased Facilities • Floor Wardens and/or Department Safety Officers will Announce “Earthquake Drill” • UCOP Staff will “Drop! Cover! Hold On!” UCOP September 2010 Safety Meeting

  6. Drop! Cover! Hold On! • DROP to the Ground (Before the Earthquake Drops You!), • Take COVER by Getting Under a Sturdy Desk or Table, and • HOLD ON to it Until the Shaking Stops UCOP September 2010 Safety Meeting

Hold On! • If No Desk or Table Near You • Cover Face & Head with Arms and Crouch in a Corner of Room • Do Not Run To Another Room to Find a Table • Seek to Immediately Protect Yourself • Earthquakes Occur Violently without Warning – You Would Likely Be Knocked to the Ground • More Likely to Be Injured By Falling/Flying Objects UCOP September 2010 Safety Meeting

Do Not …. • …Face Windows – Flying Glass • …Get in A Doorway • Will Not Protect You From Falling Debris or Flying Glass • …Run Outside • Can Be Hit By Falling Debris or Flying Glass • Safer to Stay Indoors Under a Table/Desk • …Believe the “Triangle of Life” Recommendations–Have Been Discredited UCOP September 2010 Safety Meeting

After the Initial Shock Has Subsided • Remain Calm & Be Prepared for Aftershocks • Check for Injuries & Administer First Aid to the Degree You Are Trained • Follow Directions Over Building PA System or Floor Warden Directions • Cannot Immediately Evacuate the Building • Must Assess Damage to Stairways • Assess Outside Hazards UCOP September 2010 Safety Meeting

Inspect Your Work Area • Secure Your Space • Overhead Items Above Immediate Work Area - Remove or Secure with Earthquake Putty • Overhead Shelves/Cabinets Closed or Locked • Heavy Items Stored in Lower or Middle Shelves • Breakables on Lower Shelves/Closed Cabinets • Pictures Secured to Not Fall off Hooks • Clear Exit Pathway Maintained • Brace Bookshelves/Cabinets > 6 Feet Tall UCOP September 2010 Safety Meeting

Personal Preparedness • Comfortable Athletic-Type Shoes or Other Closed-Toe, Low/Flat Heel Shoes To Wear • Emergency Self-Charging Flashlight • Personal Items • Up to 3 Days of Essential Medications • Food/Water • Plan on How to Get Home • Public Transportation/BART Probably Not Operational • Roads/Bridges/Freeways – Either Closed Or Gridlock UCOP September 2010 Safety Meeting

  13. “Secure Your Space” Inspection Checklist • Web-Based Version Will Be Sent to All UCOP Employees • Hard Copy From Your Department Safety Officer • UCOP Be Smart About Safety Webpage • Complete Inspection ASAP, No Later Than October 21, 2010 UCOP September 2010 Safety Meeting

Earthquake Preparedness Raffle • Complete Inspection No Later Than October 21, 2010 and Be Entered into an Earthquake Preparedness Incentive Raffle • Complete Inspection Checklist Online; or • Drop Off Completed Hard Copy Checklist at the Earthquake Preparedness Booth Between Oct. 19 - 21 • If at Off-Site Location – Complete Inspection Checklist Online or Give a Hard Copy Checklist to Your Department Safety Officer • Raffle – 10 Personal Earthquake Preparedness Kits or Other Safety Incentive Awards UCOP September 2010 Safety Meeting
