She has performed at Carnegie Recital Hall and Lincoln Center’s Bruno Walter Hall, and was invited by Manos Hadjidakis to appear on Greek National Radio (ERT), and at the Piraeus National Theater. With memorable melodies, the songs are about realism and social justice and the importance of dignity in the face of sorrow and grief. He was influenced by the music of Asia Minor and the themes of the urban lower working classes in the 1930s. Xarhakos has written that, “Folk music is one of the basic, essential sources of the Greek tradition in song….” He has scored approximately 40 films, various symphonic scores and countless television and theater productions. Perhaps his most popular creation is the music for the 1983 Costas Ferris film, Rembetiko, highlights of which will be presented in this program along with other rembetika favorites.
