  1. Mercury Ashlee Beaver Alexis Pochubay

  2. Table of contents • Distance from the sun • How many earth days does it takeMercury to go around the sun • How fast does the planet rotate compared to earth • What is the temperature on Mercury? • When was Mercury discovered and by whom? • What is the surface like and from what material is it made? • Mecury’s Atmosphere. . . • Mercury can or cannot sustain life • Other interesting facts about Mercury • Resources

  3. Distance from the sun • Mercury is the closest to the sun and is only 56.9 million km. away. • It’s three times closer than Earth. • It’s closer and farther from the sun at different points of time.

  4. How many earth days does Mercury take to go around the sun? • 88 days • Since Mercury is the closes planet to the sun it takes shorter days • It rotates around the sun quicker and makes the days shorter

  5. How fast does it rotate compared to Earth? • It’s rotation is 58.6 hours • It rotates slower than earth • At the closest orbit Mercury is only 46 million km from the sun

  6. The temperature on Mercury • 800 F during the days • 350F during the night • The Ancient Greeks referred to Mercury as Apollo “the evening star” • The Greeks also called it the “Wondering star”

  7. Mercury was discovered and by who? • Mercury was discovered by Ancients • The planet Mercury has been around for so long people don’t even now when it was discovered • The planet Mercury was first photographed in detail on March 29th 1974

  8. What is the surface like on Mercury and what is made out of? • The planet is made out of rocks, and is terrestrial • Mercury is a solid planet because it is closest to the sun • (Terrestrial means that something can walk on Mercury or it could hold weight on its surface)

  9. Does Mercury have an atmosphere? • Mercury does not have an atmosphere because it traps all the suns heat • Mercury does not have an atmosphere but it does have glaciers

  10. Could life survive on Mercury? • No, because if all the heat is trapped in the atmosphere it would feel like living in an oven for 30 days • There is no air on Mercury because it is so hot

  11. Interesting facts about Mercury! • Closest to the sun • Named after a Roman god • No moons • The color is dark gray • The size is 4,879 km along the equator • One side is always hot and one side is always cold • The temperature can get as low as -183c (on the cold side)
