Read through English Gothic chapter 2 (pages 40-45) What does this says about Brenda and what she represents in the society of the 1930’s? Add to your character profile of Brenda. Consider the irony of the statement in the last three sentences of the chapter.
Read pages 46 – 49. Consider the role of women before the war. How is Brenda showing a different view of women in this part of the novel? Compare this view with Tony’s comment that John Andrew should be ‘considerate to people less fortunate that you, particularly women.’ (p.25)
