Features of Current Year 5 • Up to 40% (industrial) project • Dissertation Study (5 student groups) in Electronics • Group design projects in Mechanical • Teach via 3 week intensive learning modules • Don’t achieve any real interdiscliplinary teaching activity
Plans for RAEng Project • Increase guest lectures in years 1 – 4 (BEng) • Launch interdiscliplinary design studies options into MEng year 5 study • Implement as 5 week intensive learning modules • Taught in self study teams • Organised and Supported by Visiting Professors (and academic staff)
Study topics • Select two design topics from: • Hydro-electric power system (Ci/El/Me) • Waste water treatment plant (Ch/Ci/Me) • Nanoelectronics (Ch/El/Me)
Key Features of Study • Interdiscliplinary team work • Group study • Real life case study design examples • VP support for 3 days/week for 5 week duration • Run 4 parallel groups on each study topic • With 3 students per disclipline (& 3 discliplines per group), i,.e. 9 students per group • 36 students study a topic for 5 weeks • Assess by design review and short report
VP appointments • Appoint 4 (part-time) Visiting Professors • Task them to deliver early year guest lectures, embedded in appropriate lecture modules to: • Introduce students to their topics • Major activity is to organise topics for and support 5th year group studies
Potential VP Appointees • Brian Count, ex CEGB • Ian Pope, Pope Associates • Gordon Masterton, Babtie Group • Quentin Leiper, Carrillion • John Arthur, ex Thales MESL
