Context • 1984, 1998, 2005, 2010, Now • Over 18 million people affected across 8 countries (16m in Niger, Burkina Faso, Mali, Chad - 10 million in 2010) • Chronic poverty • Cyclical drought and poor harvests • Livelihoods destroyed • Conflict (Mali, Nigeria) • Limited media coverage • No DEC appeal

Strategy • Goal • Capacity of communities in Sahel region are strengthened so that they are better prepared to cope with future food crisis. • Purpose • Comprehensive responses are carried out by partner organisations to address the immediate relief needs of local communities in the Sahel and enable them to recover and become more resilient. Partners and communities capacities are also built through the process.

  7. Responses: Projects • Immediate food aid • Asset replenishment- herds, grain banks, fodder banks • Food security- agricultural inputs • Coping mechanisms – risk/vulnerability reduction

Responses: Advocacy • UK • Sahel Working Group • Increasing international donor funding for emergency and recovery activities • UN and humanitarian coordinators demonstrating strong leadership in coordinating emergency response and raising the profile of the crisis • DFID - resilience Regional • Advocacy Capacity Builder • Partners lobby national and local leaders on food security policies and citizen’s rights

Responses: Prayer and Communications Prayer • One Voice – prayer email to Tearfund supporters • Sahel specific prayer resources on the Tearfund website • 3 volunteer prayer groups praying for Sahel specifically Communications and Media • Tearfund Appeal, Tear Times, Tearfund Prayer Diary • Regular updates from Country Reps and partners • Website updates • Tearnet updates (internal) • Regular internal updates

  10. Funding strategy income for - Food Security and DRR • Projected: £3,227,000 • Year 1 • Tearfund 2012 appeal: £1,200,000 • Integral Members: £627,000 Years 1-3 • Institutional funding: £1,250,000 • Jersey £250,000 for 3 yrs (Jan 2013 – Dec 2015)
