Context • 1984, 1998, 2005, 2010, Now • Over 18 million people affected across 8 countries (16m in Niger, Burkina Faso, Mali, Chad - 10 million in 2010) • Chronic poverty • Cyclical drought and poor harvests • Livelihoods destroyed • Conflict (Mali, Nigeria) • Limited media coverage • No DEC appeal
Strategy • Goal • Capacity of communities in Sahel region are strengthened so that they are better prepared to cope with future food crisis. • Purpose • Comprehensive responses are carried out by partner organisations to address the immediate relief needs of local communities in the Sahel and enable them to recover and become more resilient. Partners and communities capacities are also built through the process.
