Summary • The play Macbeth by William Shakespeare takes place in Midevil Scotland. It is about a man who is blinded by his ambition. There are three weird sisters who tell Macbeth he will become king. When he is king he becomes paranoid. His wife, Lady Macbeth, who has power over him convinces him to do whatever it takes to gain power and become king. To become king and to stay king, he kills king Duncan and his best friend Banquo. In the end of the play, Malcolm becomes king and restores the kingdom to the way it was before Macbeth ravaged the kingdom.
Lady Macbeth-Macbeth • “which thou esteem’st the ornament of life, And live a coward in thine own esteem” (Shakespeare 16). • Lady Macbeth believes that her husband Macbeth is not man enough to kill king Duncan. She provokes him to kill the king by calling him a coward. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth relationship is not powerful the only thing they want is power. They influence each other to kill everyone who gets in there way of power. This marriage exemplifies how detrimental power is on a alliance.
Macbeth-Banquo • “O, Treachery! Fly, good Fleance, fly, fly, fly! Thou mayst revenge. O slave” (Shakespeare 40). • Macbeth continue his killing spry by hiring murderers to kill Banquo. Macbeth kills Banquo because he is the only one who knows about the witches prophesy. Banquo suspects that Macbeth killed the king and that made him a threat to Macbeth. Macbeth back stabbed Banquo and this is important because it shows how much Macbeth is blinded by his ambition. Banquo influenced Macbeth because he didn’t believe in superstitious and Macbeth took advantage of it.
Banquo-The three witches • “Lesser than Macbeth, and greater not so happy, yet much happier” (Shakespeare 6). • The three witches put Fleance in danger when they told Banqou that his son will be crowned but not him. The three witches influence Banquo to protect his son because he knows that Macbeth is going to try to kill Fleance. The witches telling Banquo his prophecy made him suspicious of Macbeth because Macbeth prophecy was coming true. Banquo never expected that his own son would be in danger.
Lady Macbeth-Duncan • “Unsex me here, and fill me, from the crown to the toe, top-full of direst cruelty”(Shakespeare 12). • Lady Macbeth is so blind by her ambition that she advocate Macbeth to kill king Duncan. Lady Macbeth only wanted Duncan dead for she can obtain power and rule over Scotland. It was rare for lady’s in Scotland to turn cruel and be blinded by ambition. For Lady Macbeth to become evil like that and provoke Macbeth to kill Duncan was unexpected.
