Important Data! • 23% of our 5th grade students do not eat breakfast • 48% of our 5th grade students exercise less that 4 days a week, outside of school • 38% of our 5th grade students watch 2-4 hours of television everyday • We know that one out of every 2 Hispanic children will develop Diabetes in their lifetime • Many of our Hispanic children are over weight
Exercise Class • The idea started with a conversation among the parents • The parents shared the idea with the Principal • They discussed how to make with idea happen • What have been the benefits?
First Came the Exercise Class, now the Nutrition class… • We realized that exercise and good nutrition go hand in hand • Our school and our School Site Council were already involved with the goals for a “Healthier Generation” • We had another conversation
The Most Important Goal for the “Healthier Generation” Movement • “Working to eliminate childhood obesity and inspire all young people in the United States to develop lifelong, healthy habits.” • All of the schools in the ABC Unified School District are working towards this goal for all of our students
Our Nutrition Class • Together with Mrs. Dipa Shah, from the Nutrition Network, in our district, we discussed the parent’s interest in having nutrition classes. • We now have Mrs. Alma Gonzalez that comes and gives classes on a variety of nutrition topics for our parents.
The Principal’s Role • I am here to serve the parents and the students • It is my responsibility to listen to the parents, especially when they need something and to do my part to make it happen • At Melbourne we work as a team, parents, teachers, and I, so our students will have success in all areas
