  1. Journal 2.19.14 • The preamble listed the goals of the constitution. Write about two ways it tried to improve on the AOC. • We the People of the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

  2. Federalists and Anti-Federalists

  3. Goal Be able to compare federalists and antifederalists on what they believed.

  4. The Constitution • Once the Constitution was made, it had to be approved. • Even though the Constitution was agreed on, not everyone wanted it. • Two groups came out of the Constitutional convention. • Federalists • Anti-Federalists

  5. View of Articles of Confederation • Federalists • Thought the articles needed to be thrown out. • Believed unity was important for the country. Wanted a united country, not 13 individual states. • Anti-Federalists • Wanted to keep the structure of a loose union of independent states. • Wanted to modify the articles.

  6. Federal Government • Federalists • Wanted a strong federal government. • Anti-Federalists • Were afraid of the government becoming too powerful. • Wanted to keep power with the states. • Favored a government similar to the Articles of Confederation.

  7. 3 Branches • Federalists • Believed the three branches should have equal power. • Anti-Federalists • Believed that the legislative branch should have more power than the executive and the courts.

  8. Who should be in charge? • Federalists • Wanted a strong executive or president to lead the country. • Anti-Federalists • Thought a president could become king. • Wanted a weak president that had very little power.

  9. Bill of Rights • Federalists • Did not think a Bill of Rights was necessary. • Thought people would think these were their only rights. • Anti-Federalists • Believed a Bill of Rights was necessary to protect people from the government .

Their essays • Famous federalists, such as Alexander Hamilton and James Madison, wrote essays called the Federalists Papers. • These essays were published all through the country and tried to pursue people to like the constitution. • Anti-Federalists did the same thing. One famous essay was called the Federal Farmer • These essays fueled the debate over the ratification of the constitution.

  11. Ratification • For ratification to happen nine states needed to adopt the constitution. • Ratification of the Constitution happened on June 21, 1788. • Eventually all the states adopted the constitution. Rhode Island was the last one and adopted it in 1790. • Now the 13 independent states were the United States of America.
