Alaska and Hawaii • Alaska bought from Russians in 1867, considered fool at the time but has been very valuable • Sugar companies owned by Am. citizens convinced the U.S. to annex (add) Hawaii in 1898 • U.S. added Hawaii and other Pacific islands because they were strategically useful for refueling & resupplying U.S. ships
Puerto Rico • Gained from Spain in Span.-Am. War, we first ruled it by military force • Foraker Act set up a civilian (non-military) govt. • Puerto Rican are U.S. citizens but P.R. is only a U.S. territory • They have not voted to become a state yet…
Cuba • After Span. Am. War, we left troops there (though we technically didn’t take it over) • Troops did helped the Cubans, • but their main purpose was to protect U.S. sugar and tobacco companies • The Platt Amendment basically gave us special rights in Cuba, while keeping out other countries
