IS GOD FAITHFUL? Hungary 2011
YOU NEED EXODUS CHAPTER ONE
Do you get discouraged as you think about the progress of the Gospel in the world?
YOU NEED EXODUS CHAPTER ONE
Now what in the world does this passage have to do with your discouragement, world evangelization and what is happening around you?
IT RESPONDS TO OUR NEED TO SEE THAT GOD IS FAITHFUL TO HIS PROMISES IN SPITE OF CIRCUMSTANCES.
LET’S LOOK FIRST AT THE GREATER CONTEXTTHAT THIS IS BUILT UPON INGEN 12:1-3 AND GEN 15:1-6
GOD’S PROMISE IN GEN 12:1-3 Genesis 12:1-3 (ESV) Now the LORD [YaHWeH] said to Abram, "Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed."
GOD’S PROMISE IN GEN 15:1-6 Genesis 15:5-6 (ESV) And he brought him outside and said, "Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them." Then he said to him, "So shall your offspring be." And he believed the LORD [YaHWeH], and he counted it to him as righteousness.
GOD’S PROMISE WAS.. • HE WOULD MAKE ABRAM INTO A GREAT NATION. • HE WOULD MAKE HIS OFFSPRING AS THE STARS IN THE HEAVENS.
LET’S LOOK AT EXODUS 1:1-7 Exodus 1:1-7 (ESV) [1] These are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob, each with his household: [2] Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, [3] Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin, [4] Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. [5] All the descendants of Jacob were seventy persons; Joseph was already in Egypt. [6] Then Joseph died, and all his brothers and all that generation. [7] But the people of Israel were fruitful and increased greatly; they multiplied and grew exceedingly strong, so that the land was filled with them.
WHY IS THIS CHAPTER IN THE BIBLE? IT RESPONDS TO YOUR NEED TO SEE THAT GOD IS FAITHFUL TO YOU IN SPITE OF CIRCUMSTANCES.
LET’S SAY THAT AGAIN: GOD IS FAITHFUL TO YOU IN SPITE OF CIRCUMSTANCES
You can see in this passage three circumstancesthat speak to you.
WHAT ARE THE CIRCUMSTANCES IN EXODUS 1:1-7? Let’s see: [1] These are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob, each with his household: [2] Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, [3] Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin, [4] Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. [5] All the descendants of Jacob were seventy persons; Joseph was already in Egypt. [6] Then Joseph died, and all his brothers and all that generation.
WHAT GOD HAS BEEN DOING! FROM ABRAM (ABRAHAM) COMES ISAAC (HA HA!) COMES JACOB (HEEL-SNATCHER) COMES HIS 12 SONS
WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE? CHANGE!
HOW DO YOU PUT UP WITH CHANGE? EXAMPLES: • LADY WHO WAS ALARMED WHEN SHE HEARD HER PASTOR WAS LEAVING • LADY WHO WAS ALARMED ABOUT THE NEW MUSIC IN THE CHURCH
BUT WHEN THINGS CHANGE, GOD DOES NOT CHANGE! WE SING “CHANGE AND DECAY, ALL AROUND I SEE, O THOU THAT CHANGEST NOT, ABIDE WITH ME.” GOD SAYS, “I THE LORD (YHWH) DO NOT CHANGE” MALACHI 3:6
NOW LOOK AT EXODUS 1:6-7 [6] Then Joseph died, and all his brothers and all that generation. [7] But the people of Israel were fruitful and increased greatly; they multiplied and grew exceedingly strong, so that the land was filled with them.
NOTE THE ANALOGY OF SCRIPTURE! 1. the people of Israel were fruitful and increased greatly; 2. they multiplied and grew exceedingly strong, 3. so that the land was filled with them.
WHERE DID YOU HEAR THAT BEFORE?
SO WE SEE THAT… • THE GOD OF EXODUS 1 • IS THE GOD OF GENESIS 1
NOW LOOK AT THIS: HOW MANY WORDS ARE THERE FOR MULTIPLICATION HERE? 1) were fruitful; (2) and increased greatly (“swarmed”[Gen 1:20]; (3) They multiplied (4) and grew (5) exceedingly; (6) strongly; (7) so that the land was filled with them.”
SO EXODUS 1:1-7 SHOWS THAT GOD IS FAITHFUL IN SPITE OF CHANGE.
NOW LET’S LOOK AT A 2ND CIRCUMSTANCE IN EX. 1:8-14 [8]Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. [9] And he said to his people, "Behold, the people of Israel are too many and too mighty for us. [10] Come, let us deal shrewdly with them, lest they multiply, and, if war breaks out, they join our enemies and fight against us and escape from the land." [11] Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with heavy burdens. They built for Pharaoh store cities, Pithom and Raamses. [12] But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and the more they spread abroad. And the Egyptians were in dread of the people of Israel. [13] So they ruthlessly made the people of Israel work as slaves [14] and made their lives bitter with hard service, in mortar and brick, and in all kinds of work in the field. In all their work they ruthlessly made them work as slaves. EXODUS 1:8-14.
REVIEW TO MAKE SURE WE KNOW WHERE WE ARE IN EXODUS 1:1-7 WE SAW THAT GOD IS FAITHFUL IN SPITE OF CHANGE. NOW IN THIS PASSAGE WE HAVE ANOTHER CIRCUMSTANCE. NOT CHANGE BUT….
LET’S LOOK AT EX. 1:8-14 AGAIN! [8]Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph.
AND NOTE VERSES. 13-14 IN PARTICULAR. 13] So they ruthlessly made the people of Israel work as slaves [14] and made their lives bitter with hardservice, in mortar and brick, and in all kinds of work in the field. In all their work they ruthlessly made them work as slaves. EXODUS 1:8-14.
LET’S COUNT! “So the Egyptians made the children of Israel work(1) with rigor(2) and made their lives bitter with hard service(3), in mortar and brick, and in all kinds of work(4) in the field, in addition to all their (other) work(5), wherein they made them serve (6) with rigor(7).”
BUT IN SPITE OF PERFECT DIFFICULTY (7) GOD WAS STILL FAITHFUL! LOOK- V. 12a “BUT THE MORE THEY WERE OPPRESSED, THE MORE THEY MULTIPLIED AND THE MORE THEY SPREAD ABROAD.”

EXODUS 1:8-14 SAYS: GOD IS FAITHFUL TO YOU IN SPITE OF TRIALS AND DIFFICULTIES
REVIEW • GOD IS FAITHFUL TO YOU IN SPITE OF CHANGE • GOD IS FAITHFUL TO YOU IN SPITE OF DIFFICULTIES
NOW EX. 1:15-21 (7 VERSES) Then the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other Puah, [16] "When you serve as midwife to the Hebrew women and see them on the birthstool, if it is a son, you shall kill him, but if it is a daughter, she shall live." [17] But the midwives feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but let the male children live. [18] So the king of Egypt called the midwives and said to them, "Why have you done this, and let the male children live?" [19] The midwives said to Pharaoh, "Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women, for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife comes to them." [20] So God dealt well with the midwives. And the people multiplied and grew very strong. [21] And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families. Exodus 1:15-21 (ESV)
THIS IS NOT CHANGE AS IN VERSES 1-7 THIS IS NOT DIFFICULTY AS IN VERSES 8-14
THIS IS ALL OUT SATANIC ATTACK AND IS GOD FAITHFUL IN THIS CIRCUMSTANCE?
YES! But the midwives feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but let the male children live.

GOD IS FAITHFUL EVEN IN ALL-OUT ATTACK “AND THE PEOPLE MULTIPLIED AND GREW VERY STRONG.” (v. 20)
THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED… -- IN THE HISTORY OF THE CHURCH --RECENTLY IN CHINA --AND IT WILL ALWAYS HAPPEN
LET’S REVIEW GOD IS FAITHFUL TO HIS PROMISES… IN SPITE OF CHANGE (1-7) IN SPITE OF DIFFICULTY (8-14) IN SPITE OF ALL OUT ATTACK (15-21)
