About Schizophrenia • A psychotic disorder that causes severe mental disturbances that disrupt thoughts, speech and behavior • Means split mind,
Symptoms • Hallucinations, delusions, disordered thinking, movement disorders, flat affect • Social withdrawal, hostility or suspiciousness, inappropriate laughter or crying, deterioration of personal hygiene, extreme reaction to criticism, insomnia or oversleeping
Diagnosis of this • The diagnosis is very complicated • Psychiatric evaluation is essential, as well as medical history exams and lab tests
Those affected • Men and women are affected equally • Men mostly in their late teens or early twenties • Women mostly in their late twenties or early thirties • Rarely ever found in children
Causes • Genetic-strong hereditary component. First degree relative with schizophrenia has a 10 percent chance of deleloping this disorder • Environmental causes-prenatal exposure to viral infection, low oxygen levels during birth, physical or sexual abuse in childhood
Treatments • Antipsychotic medications, adjunctive pharmacotherapy for anxiety, depression, and aggression/hostility, electroconvulsive therapy, psychological interventions, vocational rehabilitation, assertive community treatment/assertive case management
