Gaborone, Capital City of Botswana • GaboroneCity isanadministrative centre established in 1964 as the Capital of the new Botswanawhichattained Independence onthe 30th September 1966. • Seats of the 3 arms of GovernmentbeingtheExecutive, Legislativeand Judicial. • Housesallsectors – Primitesettlement. • Populationestimationas at 2018 is269 997 , 11.203% of theCountry’sPopulation.

  3. MainUrbanChallenge / Priority • One of the Urban Challenges that exists in the City is Urban Sprawl. This results in the city land area being increased so much that: - it infringes into the tribal areas thus taking up fertile agricultural land. - Cost of servicing is too high. - Travel times to services is increased. - The vehicle ownership and unattractive alternatives to transport has culminated into serious traffic congestion. - Some parts of the City become dead at night hence resulting in escalated crime.

  4. Description of the Project the City is Undertaking to address the challenge • The Department, in its endeavour to address the entire spectrum of urban challenges of rather spatial plan(NSP). • The overall goal of the NSP is to align all development initiatives of the country with space. As its known, land is a finite resource that needs prudent management so that it provides for enjoyment today, tomorrow and the future. • Today we see Gaborone developed in a generous manner. It sits on approximately 169 sqKms. This can be compared with Singapore where an area of 710 sqKms, 20% of that goes to conservation and the remaining 80% manage to accommodate 5.5 million inhabitants. • The project therefore seeks to come up with strategies that will ensure that the city continues to be the economic driver of the country. Most importantly the strategies should provide for inclusiveness, resilience, safety and sustainability. • Outcomes of this product will involve all sectors of the economy. Every player is run with his portion over the implementation lifetime of the strategy so that at the end all contribute to a functional city.

  5. SpecificDesiredOutcomes • Statement of Purpose Elevate Gaborone into a World Class city with improved mobility, better urban amenities, more vibrant centres, more inclusive and livable neighbourhoods, greater housing choice and accommodating a larger population. • Participation-SG-UN Habitat iLUGP Would give me and my team an opportunity to learn from best practices. Having learnt of the success stories of Singapore, this will accord the team to understand how to model implementation of the strategies including issues of finance and political will which are normally contributors to realizing results of plans. Thecost of sprawl • Benefits of high density • Lower development and service costs • Reduced land consumption • Higher mobility • Better businesses • Better Communities

  6. Learningpoints to share. • Spatial Planning functions better if it is approached holistically. • Having the NSP as a strategic instrument allows for a clear overview of planning development at the appropriate place and where it is most needed. • The NSP will provide a baseline for all developments in the country and will assist in finding solution to urban challenges. • The most appropriate solution to urban sprawl is densification and compact development. In that you accommodate more people in less space and leave land for future generation.
