  2. Topics • Summit status • Western Region Networking (WRN) status • Federal outlook (The Stimulus: Year 2) • National network status (NLR, I2, commodity peering) • The Quilt

Summit status • Goal: establish a lightweight, nimble collaborative overlay above the Front Range GigaPoP (FRGP) and the Utah Education Network (UEN) for managing regional connectivity (including peering) and potentially other related regional IT projects • Members: FRGP and UEN • Lightweight agreement in place with process open to other aggregating members over time – ends 6/30/10 • Still discussing NLR service

Western Region Network • The Parties enter into this AGREEMENT to promote, advance, and sustain advanced networking services in support of research, education, and their respective missions, including participating in and sharing access to national research and education networks, e.g. Internet2, National LambdaRail, commodity networks, transit/peering connections, and other such similar services as may be agreed upon by the Parties under the terms and conditions of this AGREEMENT.

  5. Western Region Networking (WRN) status • Members are: CENIC, FRGP, PNWGP, UNM • An opportunity to improve network service for “the West”: • Arizona • California • Colorado • Idaho • New Mexico • Washington • Wyoming • In discussions with IRON and Oregon

  6. WRN • Intra-region peering • NLR and Internet2 services • Back each other up (provide diverse layer 2 and 3 if on-net failures) • Efficient and cost-effective commodity and TransitRail (TR) and Commercial Peering Service (CPS) connections

  7. WRN status • Agreement in place between UCAR/FRGP, CENIC, PNWGP, University of New Mexico • WRN Policy and Technical Committees – meet regularly by phone and in person • Network design complete and switches and circuits being ordered • 3 10Gbps I2 connections (KC, LA, Seattle) • 4 10Gbps NLR connections (Denver, ABQ, LA, Seattle) • Cost model for year one approved (I2/NLR – does not include future commodity savings) • Saving $50K year one with NRC • Saving $300K annually after NRC • Addendum to agreement in progress for new members

  8. Federal outlook (stimulus funding opportunities) • NSF ARI • Awards announced • BiSON not awarded and then was awarded for optical upgrade • Others? • NTIA BTOP • Round 1 awarded and in progress • Round 2 in due diligence • FCC National Broadband Plan • EPSCoR • GENI proposal out

NLR • CEO search completed – Glenn Ricart hired and completing first 9 months • Jim Dolgonas chair • Kurt Snograss joined in May at Chief Administrative and Financial Officer full time • Strategic planning retreat in June 2010 • “NLR has agreed to pursue business opportunities that ensure that NLR's mission will be met and the long term viability of NLR”

Internet2 • Strategic Plan implementation – ongoing • New CEO search underway • Search committee chaired by Molly Broad (ACE) • Anticipated consolidation of IP and dynamic services on single platform (Juniper MX960 – IP router + Eth switch) • Denver router node? • FRGP renewing SEGP for a second year

  12. Internet2/NLR • UCAN proposal • Telepresence MoU • ESnet 100Gbps proposal out – proposals due soon

  14. The Quilt • Lots of activity on stimulus opportunities • New CIS pricing complete and to be announced • Input on Erate • Investigating opportunities working with StateNets • Telepresence working group • GENI working group and GENI workshop in July • Quilt/StateNets CEO roundtable next month?
