Internet Searching • Internet Basics included a brief introduction to the library website and your account. • Internet Searching builds on these skills to help you to become comfortable searching online.
What is the Internet? • The Internet is a massive network of networks. It connects millions of computers together globally. • The World Wide Web is a way of accessing information over the Internet.
What can I do on the Internet? • Find information • Communicate (i.e. email, IM, Skype) • Share (upload and share pictures and more) • Shop (the web is the world’s biggest shopping mall!) • Play (you can play games on the web)

Ways of Navigating to a Site • Typing in the web address – as every page on the Internet has an unique address • Using links – Surrey Libraries has a great list • Using a search engine (i.e. Google or Bing)
Parts of a Web Address • Every web page has an address, sometimes called a URL • URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator • http:// stands for hypertext transfer protocol • www stands for ‘World Wide Web’ • The domain name is the name of the site – i.e. surreylibraries • The extension is the type of site: .com, .ca, .org
Navigating to a Site:Typing in the Address • Type in www.surreylibraries.ca • This is the Library’s online ‘address.’ • This method works for any site you know the address of • Try typing www.surrey.ca for the City of Surrey’s website • Use the ‘back’ button to go back
Navigating to a Site:Using a Search Engine (Google) • A search engine returns a custom list of links based on your keyword search. • When multiple pages from the same website are found, the most relevant page is listed first with the next page from the same site indented below.
Google Image Search • Visit http://www.images.google.com • Google Image Search is a search service created by Google which allows users to search the web for image content. • Filter image results by their size, type and colour.
