  4. Types of Questions • Rum the gamut of “why” and “explain” to “support or refute” and “how and why”

  5. Goal of DBQ • Demonstrate your ability to tease out the thrust and substance of each document then combine this information with your own general knowlede in an analytical and evaluative essay

  6. Quality DBQ Essays Have • Background • Your own knowledge of the topic • Analysis • Your ability to interpret and explain the documents • Synthesis • Your ability to blend your outside information with the information provided in the documents to explain an issue

  7. Steps in Organizing the DBQ • Brainstorm ideas that relate to the question • Consider a structure for your response • Analyze each document • What or who is the source?

  8. Akelman’s Tips for Writing the DBQ • The exam is 45 minutes, you have to write a 5 paragraph essay in this time • Breakdown should look like this

  9. Breakdown • 5 minutes – write down everything you know about the Questions (P.E.P.S.) • 5 minutes – read and write down things next to your sources (scribble ideas next to it) • 5 minutes – come up with your thesis and plan your essay on the scrap paper • 30 minutes – write your essay

  10. Thesis • Today we are going to work on a thesis • SOMETHING YOU CAN PROVE!!! • All DBQ’s have to have a thesis. • Work independently to come up with a Thesis. Spend 5 minutes doing PEPS, 5 reading the documents, and then come up with a thesis • I need to approve your thesis before you can begin to write.
