Absolute Value and Opposites • Absolute Value – The DISTANCE from any number to zero on the number line. This value is ALWAYS positive. • Why? • Because absolute value is a distance. • Distances are positive. • Think about it………….. • Walking, biking, riding negative distances?
Absolute Value and Opposites • Example one: • Find the absolute value of the following. • A. l-5l = 5 • Because 5 is 5 units away from zero. • B. l2l = 2 • Because 2 is 2 units away from zero. • C. l0l = 0 • Because 0 is 0 units away from zero.
Absolute Value and Opposites • Example 2: Evaluate each expression. • A. 3l4nl + 8 when n = 2 • 3l4(2)l + 8 • 3l8l + 8 • 3 x 8 + 8 • 24 + 8 • 32 • B. 3 + l-7l 3 + 7 10 c. –l-4l + 6 -4 + 6 2
Absolute Value and Opposites • Opposite integers have the same absolute value. • That is to say, they are the same distance from zero. • They have opposite signs. • When graphing them on the number line, plot the same digit on the opposite side of zero.
