GUIDANCE AND DISCIPLINE “It’s more than saying NO!”
Three basic principles for guiding and disciplining children Principle #1: “Less is more” • Keep important rules to a minimum • Have clear consequences for breaking those rules
Consequences • Make sure children know what the consequences for breaking rules are • Make sure you are willing to implement them
Consequences, cont. • Don’t choose consequences that are too harsh or impossible to enforce
Follow Through • When a rule has been broken, allow one warning • Don’t threaten—remind the child they have broken the rule and they have another chance
Follow Through, cont. • If he/she doesn’t, apply the consequence. It’s important that the child understands that the consequence is the result of their behavior. • Be calm
GUIDANCE AND DISCIPLINE Helping a child control their behavior in positive ways helps them grow to be responsible and capable of making good decisions.
