Creating the Note Cards AP Language and Composition
Step One: Choose a category Style/Structure – the form of the text Purpose – the reason for Audience – questions related to the reader Diction – word choice Figurative Language – making unusual comparisons Imagery – creating sensory empathy
Step 2: Write the question • Employ AP Jargon. (use the key words/phrases chart) • Pattern your question after a practice test question or a Patterns question • It’s possible that the category will not be obvious until justification. (I’ll explain this)
Example If one were building a house of horrors, which of the following would be best suitable as a model or inspiration?
Step 3: Create Answer Choices • There should be no obviously wrong choices • There should be one that seems right but isn’t • You need to be able to defend the correct answer logically • There should be five choices (A-E) • Cite the line or paragraph if possibe
Example If one were building a house of horrors, which of the following would be best suitable as a model or inspiration? • Piazza of the Grand Duke (8) • Palazzo Vecchio (9) • The Castle of Otranto (11,12) • Ponte Vecchio (27, 28) • Galley of the Grand Duke (33)
Step 4: Write the justification • Use the back of the note card • Write 2 or 3 sentences that explain how or why the correct answer is the logical choice • Be sure sure you’ve explained why none of the other choices are correct. • It’s not enough to say “there not correct.”
Example C. The Castle of Otranto is described using such terms as “ponderous gloom,” “faded” and “tarnished” and “mouldering.” These are evocative of a place that is creepy and frightening. None of the other choices projects these qualities.
