Nursing and Health Sciences Nursing Program • Associate degrees • ASN - Associate of Science in Nursing • for students new to nursing and current LPNs seeking RN certification • AS – Associate of Science in pre-Nursing Transfer • for students seeking to transfer to a four-year BSN program • Bachelors degree • BSN – Bachelor of Science in Nursing • a completion degree for RNs Health Sciences Program • Associate degree • AS – Associate of Science in Health Information Management • for students interested in entry or transfer into health care services (follows general A-G core) • Bachelor’s degree • BHS – Bachelor of Health Services in Health Services and Informatics Administration • for students seeking positions in management and administration of the health care industry, particularly in regard to information technology
Overview: Four Nursing Programs Associate Degree Programs 1. Nurse Transfer (AS) Degree Prepares for transfer to a 4 year school 2. Associate of Nursing Degree (ASN) 2 year degree (4 semesters-no summers) program STRONGLY suggest core requirements are complete or near complete before applying 3. LPN/RN Bridge Program Follows ASN guidelines to bridge from LPN to RN ASN and Bridge Program Overlap Bachelor Degree Program 4. RN-BSN Completion Program Entered after ASN; additional core requirements. Begins each Summer Must have GA Nursing license before entering Fall semester
1. Nursing Transfer (AS)Degree Purpose • To transfer to a 4 year BSN program in a different school Requirements • Students follow the general A-G core curriculum • Students should work closely with advisor to follow Area F requirements in the catalog Note:This program does NOT satisfy the Associate of Science nursing program.
2. Associate Science in Nursing (ASN) Degree Program Purpose • To prepare students to receive the ASN degree and to provide a foundation to pursue the BSN degree Requirements • Students should follow the Nursing Core curriculum (shaded area), NOT the general A-G core curriculum • Students must apply and be accepted to enter the nursing program • ASN = 2 years once admitted (3 years w/core)
3. LPN/RN Bridge Program Purpose • To prepare students to move from Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to Registered Nurse (RN) • Classes begin in the spring semester each year and continue in Fall and the following Spring • Admission period: July for the following January No summer semester exists Requirements • Meet ALL admission criteria as listed in the ASN academic core • Have a minimum of one year of practice* as a Licensed Practical Nurse • Successful completion* of ATI LPN STEP Test; Dosage Calculation Test; and Skills (lab) Test for conditional applicants * Note:This is an additional requirement from ASN program requirements
3. Important Points for ASN and LPN/RN Bridge Sciences cannot be over 5 years old upon entry to the program Biology 2210 has pre-requisite requirements (see core sheet) Humanities requirement allows only courses listed: Communication and Foreign Language do NOT transfer into the program for ASN or LPN-RN (see nursing core) Advisors are assigned after classes begin. Students see advisor each semester while a “pre-nursing” major. NOTE:Students who apply to both the ASN and LPN Bridge Program can only accept a seat in one of them. The other seat will be relinquished.
ASN & LPN/RN Bridge Admission • Two admission periods: • July for the following January (LPN-RN and ASN) • December to late January for the following August (ASN) • ASN = 4 semesters once admitted (3 years w/core) • LPN-RN = 3 semesters • Minimum GPA of 2.5 (plan for higher) • Apply to ASN program after 85% of core is completed • Minimum TEAS score (version V) = 60 • TEAS = 4 hr. exam given off site (see www.atitesting.com) • Math, Reading, Science, English • Complete application (w/ critical thinking exam) Note: Students with a D or F in 2 previous nursing courses are permanently exempt from applying at Gordon. Note: LPN-RN Bridge program has additional requirements
ASN & LPN/RNApplication Procedures • Follow checklist to create the complete packet • Critical Thinking Test* • Upon receipt of a completed packet, students will be given a specific date/time to take the test • An applicant who does not complete the critical thinking exam will not be considered for acceptance • * $25 fee • * Minimum score = 50 Send all non-Gordon transcripts to your home, not to the nursing office Requirements: The application must be submitted in ONE COMPLETE PACKET*
ASN & LPN/RN Admission Committee Points • Core GPA • # of Core courses completed • Biology/Science GPA • TEAS score • Critical Thinking Assessment • GDN student = +2 pts. • Ranked highest to lowest by Committee TIPS • Committee counts EACH attempt at a core class • Admissions Pool = 3-4 times more applicants than slots • # of slots will vary each semester due to # still in program
4. RN-BSN Completion Program Purpose • To offer registered nurses the opportunity to obtain a BSN degree Requirements • 122 semester hours of credit for graduation including completion of 31 semester hours of required upper division nursing courses • Begins each Summer. Must have GA Nursing license before entering Fall semester. A one-year program for current RN’s. • See BSN office and web site for details
Faculty/Course Information • Check Gordon College web page regularly for updates! • Working full-time during the nursing program is not advisable • Background check/drug screening/DUIs/felonies = inability to attend clinical site or sit for Board exam • Use time management; be professional; think critically
