Mobilizing Community To Action • Since 1923, the United Way of El Paso County has been mobilizing the community to take action to support critical health and human services. • Today we are mobilizing community to GIVE, ADVOCATE, and VOLUNTEER around critical issues in: • Education • Basic Needs • Income
Place Based Strategies • Currently focused on developing place-based • strategies in two communities: • Northeast El Paso • East El Paso
Asset Based Approach • Key community assets include: • Economy • Associations • Institutions • Places and Spaces • People
Northeast Coalition • The Northeast Coalition is a broad based multi-sector collaboration focusing on positive outcomes for children and youth living in Northeast El Paso. • Representation from: • Local Government • Education Providers • Nonprofits • Social Service Providers • Business • Faith-based Organizations • Community Residents
Northeast Coalition • Started as a collaboration with Justice of the Peace Precinct 2 (Judge Brian Haggerty) to address the high rate of truancy in his court • Planned and implemented five F.A.C.E.S. events • Development of a community blog • More than 300 community organizations represented
Rallying around education • F.A.C.E.S. – Families and Communities Engaged in Schools • Organization fairs • Parent cafes • Parental engagement activities • Free book distributions • Community building activities
Rallying around education • F.A.C.E.S. at Schuster Elementary School • 1st F.A.C.E.S. event • More than 150 parents and students in attendance • 26 Community organizations in attendance
Rallying around education • F.A.C.E.S. at Irvin High School • More than 175 parents and students in attendance • 19 Community organizations in attendance • Distributed more than 500 Free books to children and youth of all ages • Parental engagement activities
