About Alcohol Advertising... • The sponsorship by alcohol companies of major sporting events puts alcohol advertising in the public arena at all times of the day (and not just after 8.30pm on TV) • This reinforces what many consider as an unhealthy relationship between sport and drinking alcohol
The cleverness of some beer ads in particular means that some phrases in some adverts are recognised by many in NZ society and some phrases have become ‘cultural’ expressions • Alcohol companies have huge advertising budgets and can afford high-profile and expensive advertising such as billboards at major city intersections or on main highways, where they are highly visible to everyone – including young people
