Igneous Rock • Igneous rock – formed from hardened cooled magma. • Magma temperatures range from: 1202 – 2192 degrees Ferhrenheit. • Lava – magma that reaches Earth’s surface and cools. • Intrusive – igneous rocks formed under Earth’s surface. • Extrusive – Igneous rocks formed above Earth’s surface. • Basaltic – dark, dense igneous rock. • Granitic – light colored igneous rocks with a lower density.
Metamorphic rocks Metamorphic rock – rocks that have changed because of changes in temperature and pressure. Foliated – When mineral grains line up in parallel layers. Nonfoliated– when the mineral grains grow and rearrange, but they don’t form layers.
Sedimentary Rocks Sediments – loose materials such as rock fragments, mineral grains, and bits of shell that have been moved by wind, water, ice or gravity. Sedimentary rocks – forms when sediments are pressed and cemented together. Compaction - sediments that stick together to form solid rock. Cementation – occurs when quartz, calcite, and hematite are deposited between the pieces of sediments.
