What is Climate Change? • The Earth has always had a climate system that changes, but for millions of years it has always been a system that balances. • Over the past 100 years the Earth has increased by about 1.8 degrees Celsius • Droughts, flooding, sea levels rising, intense rain and sweltering heat are just a few of the effects of climate change we are seeing.
How has Earth changed over the last two hundred years that has altered our climate and increased the rate of climate change so drastically ?
What was the population of Earth 200 years ago? 1.5 Billion People What is the current population of Earth? 7.1 Billion People
How does the population growth effect Climate Change? A greater population means more need…. • For use of natural resources • For factories • For transportation • To use resources faster than we can replace them
Greenhouse Effect How does this affect Climate Change? Image Source: Noaa.gov
What is the Greenhouse Effect? Extremely important to life on Earth. Traps enough sunlight, water vapor, and other important greenhouse gases to allow us to live. Problem: Humans are creating an abundance of Greenhouse Gases such as Co2 through the burning of fossil fuels, this then traps the energy that would normally return to space, in turn, creating warming. Who is to blame? Us, human beings are the greatest factor. Our actions over the course of our lives will impact the Earth for hundreds and thousands of years!
What can we do? Take Action! How?
Here at Pleasantville Middle School we performed and Eco-Footprint • An Eco-Footprint is a tool that allows us to calculate our impact on the environment. It looks at our everyday actions and analyzes their effects on the environment. • An Eco-Footprint shows how many “Earths” we would need in order to continue our everyday lives.
Why perform an Eco-Footprint? • Think critically about where we live • Analyze the choices and consequences of our actions • Compare and contrast our “Footprints” • Build interdisciplinary links • Become active local and global citizens • Visualize a more sustainable world
How will we change this? Becoming a sustainable community and reducing our “footprint” Using resources so that they are not depleted. Allowing future generations to live as we do today. Reducing our carbon emissions as greatly as possible to reduce our “footprint”
How did 6th Graders last year help to reduce their footprint?
Using Castle Learning Student’s complete an online learning review quiz to practice before every science test. So far to date, we have saved over 15,000 sheets of paper with Castle Learning Reviews
What will you do to reduce your eco-footprint? • Start small by bringing a reusable bag with you instead of using plastic Fast Facts: 1) A plastic shopping bag can take anywhere from 15 to 1000 years to decompose. 2) An estimated one million birds and 100,000 turtles and other sea animals die of starvation each year after ingesting discarded plastic bags which block their digestive tracks. 3) Made from petroleum products and natural gas, plastic bags utilize nonrenewable resources. 4) In New York City alone, one less grocery bag per person would reduce waste by 5 million pounds and save $250,000 in disposal costs.
