Being Part of a Digital Classroom: FAQs Should I use my laptop/netbook device during all English lessons? Yes. In this class, you should be prepared to use your laptop every lesson. You may not need it for ALL tasks, but you’ll probably need it every day. How do I connect to FHS wireless internet? When you launch an internet manager from your device, you’ll have a range of possible connections that appear – the FHS connection is password protected. All you need to make a connection to FHS wireless is the current password, which any teacher can give you. I will make sure all my students know the password at all times. What access do I have using FHS wireless? FHS Wireless is available to students Monday-Friday, 7am to 6pm. It is not unlimited access to all sites – ‘Watchdog’ will still block sites that are considered as lacking in educational value, or a risk of inappropriate content. Can I charge my device at school? In my class, you can – first in, first served for a wall socket! If you choose to use any other power point around the school (perhaps during lunchtime), don’t leave it unattended. Check with other teachers before assuming you can charge your device during their lesson.
Being Part of a Digital Classroom: FAQs How do I send work from my device to a school printer? There are several steps to this. • Log onto a specific website (teacher will give youthe address first time) • Upload your document. • The site will ‘ask’ you which printer you want to use. All printing is done through your ‘Paper-cut’ account (a printing account set up for you by the school, which gives you some printing credits to begin the year, and which can be topped up when you need to by purchasing more credits from the student centre). Can I submit work to the teacher using a pen-drive? I will accept digital work via a pen-drive, as well as via email with attachment or by sharing an online document. Be aware that other students or teachers may not, for fear of viruses. What sort of work may I do with my device, during lessons? Any kind of word processing, using the internet to search for information related to the lesson, visiting the wiki and/or Ultranet, emailing the teacher, viewing lesson related clips and listening to lesson related audio (with headphones), recording activities taking place when requested, sharing documents for group work/assessment, sending work to print. Anything that I shouldn’t do? Browse the internet/work on documents not related to the task at hand, send/read emails + messages that are not lesson related, record activities taking place without teacher’s permission. If I feel you are straying from the task that is taking place, I’ll ask you once to put your lid down/the device away. A second warning will have the device placed on my desk for the rest of the period. If these instances occur more than twice, your device will not be welcome in E11.
