EOC Science Activity at ANUTech in Canberra Susan Campbell, Dean Graetz, Edward King, Jenny Lovell
WHAT do we do? • Produce the CSIRO AVHRR Time Series (CATS) • Example of data consistency and standards (Quality) which flows from CSIRO best teams/practice. • AVHRR for land is chosen as the first example because of demand for high quality data sets (1981 - present) for research and consulting.
WHY do we do it? • There is widespread and persistent demand from CSIRO colleagues for access to consistent, high quality land surface variables derived (in part) from AVHRR for: • Carbon cycle measurement & modelling • Surface Energy Balance (Water, Carbon) • ‘State of the Environment’ (condition and long term trends) • Given success with AVHRR, collaboration of CSIRO staff for other datasets will follow (eg SEAWifs) to the benefit of CSIRO research.
WHO do we do it for? • Carbon modelling • (Mike Raupach, Damian Barrett CL&W) • Ying Ping Wang CAR • Surface Energy Balance • Bob Cechet • GCM group at CAR • ‘State of the Environment’ • Dean Graetz (50%) (biomass burning)
NATURE of the task • Assembling, curating and stitching the 1km archive (1992-present) is one of the biggest data processing tasks ever undertaken by CSIRO (12 Tb) • It is a service to Divisional research efforts • Interactive feedback from clients (including from ourselves)
HOW do we do it? • Data archaeology • Data product definitions(TOA & Surf. Refl., LST & derivatives, NDVI etc) • Select CSIRO best practice • Quality control and feedbacks on data products
Best Practice • In order of importance • Calibration (pending) • Atmospheric correction (pending) • BRDF (active) • Navigation & remapping (active) • Cloud flagging (active)
How WELL do we do it? • Science is not rate limiting • learned from past (eg) PAL • Implementation • pathfinding efforts are also problem finding efforts • dataset development (processing and distribution) • Given the magnitude and novelty of the task we are making good progress. Two examples: • AVHRR Stitching • PAL Temporal filtering
SNIFFS for the near future • Other Time Series to follow • SEAWifs • Landsat/SPOT archives (CSIRO holdings) • SPOT VGT (from WFW collaboration) • ATSR2 & AATSR (2000-…) • GMS Time series (2000-….) • Land: Biomass Burning • Marine: Rosby Waves in Pacific, SE Asian throughflow
