802.18 RR-TAG ITU-R Update

ITU-R WP1A is developing a report on “SMART GRID POWER MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS” The plan is to complete the report at the WP1A meeting which begins May 25th As it currently exists the report is unbalanced – it supports PLT/PLC as the only technology suitable for Smart Grid communications An earlier version had some wireless in it but said that any wireless solution is inferior to PLT/PLC 802.18 RR-TAG ITU-R Update Michael Lynch, MJ Lynch & Associates

The good news is that at their last 2010 meeting WP1A removed the section saying that wireless is inferior to PLT/PLC The bad news is there isn’t any description of any wireless technologies suitable for Smart Grid communications 802.18 is proposing that the wireless WGs edit the document to provide positive input on the capabilities of wireless technologies This work should start at this meeting and must be completed by the end of the March plenary 802.18 RR-TAG ITU-R Update Michael Lynch, MJ Lynch & Associates

A method of work would have each interested wireless WG prepare their own edits to the WP1A report Those groups should coordinate with each other The edits from those groups will be brought to 802.18 to be finalized The draft report is available on 802.18’s Mentor web site as 18-11-0002 The edit needs to be received by the ITU-R NLT May 18th 802.18 RR-TAG ITU-R Update Michael Lynch, MJ Lynch & Associates
