  5. Driving While Intoxicated • In 2005, 21.8% of the 1,257 Missouri motor vehicle deaths were alcohol related • A total of 274 people were killed and 5,219 were injured in crashes involving alcohol www.saveMOlives.com

  6. Driving While Intoxicated • In Missouri, every 1.5 hours, someone dies or is injured in an alcohol-related crash

  7. Driving While Intoxicated • No one is immune from the effects of alcohol-related crashes

  8. Driving While Intoxicated • In 2005 in Missouri, there were 7,901 traffic crashes where alcohol was a contributing factor

  9. Speeding • Increases crash severity • Increases braking distances • Has minimal effect on trip length

  10. Speeding • In 2005, 40.6% of all Missouri fatal crashes involved speeding • A total of 510 people were killed and 15,159 people were injured in speed-related crashes www.saveMOlives.com

  11. Inattention • Single largest factor in crashes • Easily preventable by eliminating distractions • Includes drowsy drivers

  14. Safety Belts • Best defense against unsafe and impaired drivers • Reduce deaths 40-50% - serious injuries by 45-55% www.saveMOlives.com

  15. Safety Belts • Body weight x speed = force of “Second Crash” • It’s the law!

  16. Safety Belts • In 2005, of drivers and passengers killed in traffic crashes who had access to a safety belt, 66% chose not to buckle up.
