The Trojan War • Goddess’s fought over who’s most beautiful • Paris, son of King Priam of Troy, chosen to decide • Chose Aphrodite, rewarded with love of Helen, fairest mortal in the world • Paris stole Helen away from Sparta and husband • Sparta and allies invade Troy to get her back • Trojan War begins

  3. Achilles' Withdrawal from the War • King Agamemnon forced to give up captured girl Chreisis • Took sister Briseis from Achilles • Achilles and Agamemnon argue, Achilles refuses to fight anymore

  4. The Death of Patroclus • War went badly for Greeks • Begged Achilles to return • Best friend Patroclus took Achilles’ armor and went into battle • Killed many, but slain by Hector

  5. The Return of Achilles • Achilles mourned and grieved for Patroclus in tent • Mother Thetis came to comfort him • Convinced him to rejoin battle with new armor made by smith-god Hepheastus

  6. Achilles’ Revenge • Achilles rode into battle with a blood lust • He fought and killed King of Thebes • Also killed Penthisilea, Queen of the Amazons • Some say Achilles fell in love with her right before she died

  7. The Slaying of Hector • Hector slain by Achilles before Gates of Troy • Last words said that Achilles would soon be slain for not giving body to Priam • Achilles dragged body around Troy • Hector’s father King Priam gave Achilles whole treasury for Hector’s corpse

  8. Death of Achilles • Only vulnerable spot -his right heel • Paris shoots Achilles in heel • Achilles died from the wound
